An example of where this is used is web services responses. JSON is used a lot for application data and configuration settings, so comments are necessary now. The "official spec" is a nice idea, but it's insufficient and obsolete, so too bad. Minify your JSON if you're concerned about payload size or performance. Of course, the correct MIME media type for JSON is application/json, but it's necessary to realize what type of data is expected in your application. For example, I use Java Ext GWT and the server response must go as text/html but contains JSON data.
